2019 marks the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening up, the tremendously successful move by Deng Xiaoping that brought China, a poor and isolated backwater, to the forefront of the global economy.
Professor Cabestan, expert on Chinese politics, will take stock of the situation and enlighten us on:
• the forces behind China’s unprecedented transformation
• what hasn’t changed in those 40 years
• the challenges ahead for China
Jean-Pierre Cabestan is Professor, Head of Department of Government and International Studies, Hong Kong Baptist University. He is also associate researcher at the Asia Centre, Paris and at the French Centre for Research on Contemporary China in Hong Kong.
He has published numerous books and articles on China’s political system and reform, Chinese law and international relations. His most recent publication is Demain la Chine: démocratie ou dictature?, Paris, Gallimard, 2018 (China tomorrow: Democracy or Dictatorship?, to be published in July by Rowman & Littlefield ).
