Hong Kong a conduit for mainland, French firms

Interview of our President Alain Li in the Standard

In a recent interview with The Standard, Alain Li, President of the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Hong Kong, highlighted Hong Kong's enduring role as a strategic gateway connecting Mainland China with global markets.

Rather than describing Hong Kong as a "super connector", Alain Li referred to the city as a "conduit" - a place where capital, talent, ideas and business opportunities flow seamlessly between China and the rest of the world. With its internationally recognised legal and financial systems, free-port status, competitive tax environment and multicultural talent pool, Hong Kong continues to offer an attractive platform for companies looking to expand across Asia.

Today, around 90 French companies have established their regional headquarters in Hong Kong, using the city as a base to grow across Mainland China, the Greater Bay Area and wider Asia-Pacific markets. The Chamber has also witnessed increasing interest from members in sectors such as green technologies, fintech, healthcare and aviation, reflecting the diversification of Hong Kong's economy.

As the French Chamber celebrates its 40th anniversary, its community has grown to more than 700 members representing virtually every industry. Through its sector committees, networking events and advocacy work, the Chamber continues to support French businesses in identifying opportunities, building partnerships and contributing to Hong Kong's long-term development, particularly in sustainability and innovation.

Beyond business, Alain Li also underlined Hong Kong's growing appeal as an international cultural and tourism destination. Investments in arts, major international events and world-class infrastructure further reinforce the city's attractiveness for global talent and companies alike.

The full interview, originally published by The Standard, offers further insights into Hong Kong's competitive strengths and the role of the French business community in the city's continued development. Read the article on The Standard website.
