Suraj is a Senior Associate in the Dispute Resolution team of King & Wood Mallesons, specialising in arbitration and litigation.  He is dual qualified in Hong Kong and England & Wales, having read law at the University of Hong Kong and City University of Hong Kong.  He is fluent in English, and speaks Cantonese, Hindi and Sindhi.

 

Suraj has a broad client-base and practice.  He acts for state-owned enterprises, multi-national corporations, financial institutions and construction firms.  He acts for his clients in international commercial and construction arbitration, Hong Kong litigation, regulatory investigations and disputes.  He frequently advises on shareholder and joint venture disputes, insolvency, injunctions and enforcement proceedings.

 

Suraj frequently writes on arbitration and other topics related to dispute resolution.  He is the Editor of the Firm’s International Arbitration Blog.  He is a chapter co-author in Arbitration in Hong Kong: A Practical Guide, and Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards, and a co-author of the Annotated Ordinances of Hong Kong on the Arbitration Ordinance, and the Hong Kong Encyclopedia of Forms and Precedents on Dispute Resolution.

 

He currently serves on the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre’s HK45 Committee, and is the Firm’s representative on the ICC-HK Standing Committee on Arbitration and ADR.

 

Representative experience

Suraj has recently acted on the following matters:

 

  • Acting for triple-listed Chinese SOE in HKIAC, Court of First Instance and Court of Appeal proceedings to defend against potential winding up petition resulting from an earlier arbitration award. 
  • Acting for syndicate of 30 banks in enforcement of a HK$3 billion loan, achieving the first ever Asset Preservation Order in the Shanghai Financial Court under the recent Mainland-HK Interim Measures Arrangement.
  • Acted for global data centre provider in successfully defending against judicial review proceedings.
